Brief History of Steamboat Alley
In 1832 the Grand River Navigation Company was founded to build 7 sets of locks and canals to allow steamships to move 90kms up the Grand River from Lake Erie to the agricultural hub of Brantford.
A major portion of the funding was monies taken from the Six Nations Land Trust without their consent.
By 1846 there were 566 scows and barges passing through the Grand River Canals.
Seven years later the traffic doubled.
In 1848 there were three schooners moving through called the Tuscarora, Onondaga and Mohawk, plus two passenger steamboats called the Red Jacket and The Queen.
The Queen operated in 1851 with a capacity of 40 passengers and a crew of 13… a master, a mate, one engineer, two firemen, two wheelmen, two deckhands, a cook, steward, stewardess and purser.
Steamship towns sprung up along the Grand River like Indiana, Mt Healy, York, Middleport, Newport… and of course the still-standing famous mansion of the Thompson river baron called Ruthven.
With the building of the Buffalo-Brantford-Goderich railway line, the Grand River Navigation Company went belly up… and all Six Nations Trust Funds were lost in this illegal investment.

Grand River Rafting reserves the rights to inspect all bags and coolers being brought on trips. If alcoholic beverages are found, you will be asked to kindly return the beverages to your vehicle. If someone refuses inspection or refuses to leave alcoholic beverages behind, they will not be allowed to go on the river… and there will be no refund.

Trip Details
Discover Steamboat Alley…
Your trip starts at what remains of the steamship village York.
To begin this trip, we have you drive to Kinsman Park in the old town of Cayuga, get outfitted, then we shuttle you upstream to the York… where you paddle back to your vehicle.
With us, there is no waiting for a return pickup… because your trip ends where your car is parked!
There are washrooms & picnic tables at the beginning and end, plus the York Country Store for snacks is located at your start point!
This section has lots of easy swifts to paddle through and then flattens out for the last kilometer.
The York Cayuga River trip is excellent for all skill levels… we will see you alive at the end!
Along the way there are spots to stop and swim. Finding swimming spots is easy… peer over the side of your boat… put your paddle down and see how deep it is! The river averages 1-2 meters in depth.
This section of the Grand river has a stone-clay bottom… so having shoes to protect your feet from the rocks, is a very good idea.
There are lots of bird sightings from Bald Eagles to Blue Herons. There are turtles, wildlife and fish… but nothing dangerous to people. But best of all, no mosquitos.
This is an excellent route for beginners to safely paddle, because it is shallow in most spots, allowing non-swimmers to stand up!
It is a 10km river trip. You paddle one way with the current. How long it takes depends on the type of boat, how much you paddle… and whether you stop to swim!
If tubing, most people take 3.5 hours. Tubes are designed so that parents can tow their children.
If in a canoe, kayak or SUP… people average 2.5 tp 3 hours at a leisurely pace. When the river is flowing fast after heavy rain, you don’t have to paddle at all!
We normally suggest 4 years of age and up.

Trip Description
Whether you’re kayaking or canoeing, Big Creek offers some of the best eagle sightings as you paddle through a forest.
This meandering river is different from any other river in Ontario.
Big Creek is narrow and deep, with trees overhanging… and truly fits the description “The Canadian Amazon”.
This is a mild current river where you will be paddling a 9km adventure.
Big Creek is located near Lake Erie by Long Point… about a 2-2.5 hour drive from Toronto.
We are certified By Ontario Tourism Safe Traveler Stamp… visit our COVID Health Protocols.
Beginner to experienced. If in a canoe, kayak or paddleboard… it takes about 2.5-3 hours, but you can extend your paddle out into the Long Point Marsh.
Suggested Ages: 6 years and up.
How It Works: We have you park at the end point… then shuttle you 9 km upstream to the start… you then paddle downstream to your vehicle.
Parking & Meetup Area: At the corner of Lakeshore Rd and Hwy 59… on the left right after you cross over Lakeshore Road. DO NOT drive into Long Point…you have gone too far.
Please drive to 157 Front Rd, Port Rowan, N0E 1W0 (must use google, other apps go to wrong location) There is a big sign on the side of the road saying “Grand River Rafting Parking… park at the rear of the building.

- Bring footwear you don’t mind getting wet.
- If you burn easy… long sleeves and pants… otherwise swim suits or clothes that dry quickly. Denim jeans are not a good idea… they stay wet forever!

- Once booked… we will send you a confirmation with what to bring and to drive to 157 Front Rd, Port Rowan, N0E 1W0 (must use google, other apps go to wrong location).
- Upon arrival, meet your driver, get loaded and do an orientation talk about your trip.
- Once everyone is ready… we shuttle you upstream… then paddle down the river to your vehicle.

We offer a 29% discount on our 5km Turbo Tubing Trip from Five Oaks to Paris… regular price is $35 per person… the group discount price is $25 per person.

Our discount savings is only available to groups for 20 or more people.
This 1.5-2 hour Turbo Tubing Trip is something everyone can do regardless of age, size or skill.
These luxury lounge-chair boats are a great way to experience everything together!
Most of the river averages 1 meter in depth… so if a non-swimmers in trouble… please stand up!
Price includes park entrance fee, parking, paddle, lifejackets, turbo tube and shuttle ride upstream to the start point.

The most accurate forecasting is 12 hours or less.
Our Cancellation Policy
- Final price is based on headcount given 48 hours out from date of event.
- If cancellation is given 48 hours in advance, there is a full deposit refund.
- If cancellation is given the day before, there is a 75% refund.
- If cancellation is on the day of the trip, there is no refund.

Trip Description
Whether you’re kayaking or Turbo-Tubing, Big Creek offers some of the best eagle sightings as you paddle through a forest.
This meandering river is different from any other river in Ontario.
Big Creek is narrow and deep, with trees overhanging… and truly fits the description “The Canadian Amazon”.
This is a mild current river offers a 9km paddling adventure.
Big Creek Tubing is located near Lake Erie by Long Point… about a 2-2.5 hour drive from Toronto.
We are certified By Ontario Tourism Safe Traveler Stamp… visit our Health Protocols.
This route skill level is beginner to experienced because of the slow current on the river… and requires paddling effort.
Most people average 4 to 5 hours when tubing this route. If in a kayak… most people average about 2.5- 3 hours.
Suggested Ages: 6 years and up. With children, adults can tether the child’s tube to their tube when the child gets tired.
Suggested Weight: If over 270 lbs… call us to see what boat is best.
How It Works: We have you park at the end point… then shuttle you 9 km upstream to the start… you them paddle downstream… with a short 3 km ride back to your vehicle.
Parking & Meetup Area: NEW THIS YEAR… we are located at Birds Canada parking area at 115 Front Rd, Port Rowan, ON N0E 1M0
This location also has takeout-food and gas about 500 meters away plus the opportunity to visit and use the Birds Canada trails and facilities.

Your Trip
What to Bring:
- Good sunscreen, hat, sun glasses, retainer string for eye glasses, insect repellant, water & snacks, gloves if hands blister easily, lip balm and ziplocks for your cell phone.
- Bring footwear you don’t mind getting wet.
- If you burn easy… long sleeves and pants… otherwise swim suits or clothes that dry quickly. Denim jeans are not a good idea… they stay wet forever!
How Your Trip Works:
- You can book online or email… info@grandriverrafting.ca or contact us directly by phone 519-442-2519 or. Even though we have up to 3 people answering the phones, our lines are extremely busy… email is always best! Make sure to ask for BIG CREEK.
- Once booked… we will send you a confirmation with what to bring and to drive to 157 Front Rd, Port Rowan, N0E 1W0 (must use google, other apps go to wrong location).
- Upon arrival, meet your driver, get equipped and do an orientation talk about your trip.
- Once everyone is ready… we shuttle you upstream… you get your boat… then paddle down the river to the exit point.
- Then a short 3km shuttle back to your vehicle.
Weather & Cancellation Policies:
Final price is based on headcount given 48 hours out from date of event.
If cancellation is given 48 hours in advance, there is a full refund.
If cancelled under 48 hours, there is a 75% refund.
If cancelled on the day of your trip… there is no refund.
If bad weather… please check our 7am daily weather update to see if you are “good to go” before leaving your house.
Your group has 3 choices if bad weather:

- Choose another date

Learn about plants, trees, wildlife and Indigenous history while you do a 2-3 km hike. Let our interpretive guides show you how to identify through touch, smell and sight…. learn about unique ID features that are easy to remember. This 2-2.5 hour hiking classroom is available on demand year round, for all ages. The cost is $20 per person plus HST (minimum cost of $200 plus HST). Learn to Fly Fish in Ontario
If wishing to learn how to fly fish… then knock on the door of Fly Water for casting and instruction. Tyler Dunsmore is an excellent instructor. His fly casting programs cover equipment, casting techniques, fly patterns to imitate river insects, insect cycles, presenting flies to fish, river safety and etiquette. This 5 hour course is all inclusive. Tyler teaches along the Grand River near Paris, Ontario. His courses are designed to accommodate 1-4 people… larger groups can be accommodated.
